Living In A Material World

We are having great fun in our sewing and patchwork workshops at the moment, so we thought we would share a few nuggets of knowledge about fabric for those of you just starting out into the world of sewing!

Types of Fabric

Choosing the right fabric for your project can be tricky, so we have found a link to a brief guide from Sew My Place.com, and a video from Fleece Fun.com  – which goes a bit more in-depth into the different types of fabric and their properties to consider.

Going With The Grain

So you’ve chosen your fabulous fabric and got your perfect pattern, but what’s all this about grain, bias and selvage? At Make It & Love It.com they explain in simple terms what these mean and why they matter, and at Favecrafts.com there is a video to explain various ways to find out the grain of your fabric.

Measure Twice, Cut Once

Once you have established which way your fabric goes, it’s time to start cutting! But wait! Have a look at Craftsy.com  – which has great tips to consider before you start getting scissor happy, and Studio Fabricana.com has a great little video showing the tools required and how to get the best out of them.

We have a great range of fabrics in the shop to suit various projects, sew come on in for a browse and let us know what your next crafty creation will be! Our next sewing workshop is a patchwork project to make a Table Runner. This 2-day course starts Saturday 20th Feb, so give us a call on 00 353 49 95 27424 or click here to book your place!DSC01640
