How to Sew A Reversible Tote Bag

A useful sewing project for beginners or improvers and can be hand-sewn as well as machine sewn.

You Will Need:

  • 2 x 16 inch X 20inch Fabric A.
  • 2 x 16 inch X 20inch Fabric B.
  • 2x 8inch X 7inch (Optional, for pocket).
  • Pins.
  • Sewing machine (optional).
  • Thread.
  • Needle.
  • 2x 28inch for straps.
Use a ¼” seam allowance unless stated

Step 1

Cut out 2 x fabric A, 2 x Fabric B and 2 pockets.

Step 2

Fold three sides of pocket fabric inwards about 1/4 inch. Fold down top of twice. This will be the top of the pocket.

Step 3

Sew pocket onto one piece of fabric A and fabric B. Leave the top double folded side open. This makes a pocket on outside and inside of bag

Step 4

Put fabric A right side to right side and sew two sides and botton. Do same for fabric B but leave a 1″ gap at the bottom.

Step 5

Make a box corner on both pieces by laying seams together and sewing 1″ down. cut off tips.

Step 6

Turn fabric A right side out. Measure 10cm in and pin strap with 3cm excess on top. Repeat for all straps, making sure not to pin sides together.

Step 7

Insert fabric A with straps inside fabric B. Inside fabric is right side out. Outside fabric is inside out.

Step 8

Sew around the circumference of the bag. Add a zig-zag stitch to where the straps are to hold it more securely.

Step 9

Turn right side out by drawing the inside bag through the gap you left at the bottom and iron

Step 10

Top stitch around the opening of your bag

Step 11

Hand sew the 1″ opening in the seam closed
