How to Sew A Drawstring Back Pack

A useful sewing project for beginners or improvers and can be hand-sewn aswell as machine sewn.

You Will Need:

  • 1 x 14 inch X 38 inch Fabric A.
  • 1 x 4inch X 6inch (Optional, for pocket).
  • Pins.
  • Sewing machine (optional).
  • 80 inch or 2m of cord
  • Thread.
  • Needle.#

Use a ¼” seam allowance unless stated

Step 1

 Cut out Fabric A and fabric B (pocket)

Step 2

Fold three sides of pocket fabric inwards about 1/4 inch. Fold down top of twice. This will be the top of the pocket. Iron.

Step 3

Sew down double fold side. The fabric will be folded in half to make bag so place your pocket 1/4 of the way down on the right side. Top-stitch leaving top open.

Step 4

Fold fabric in half so it measures 19″ x 14″. Mark both sides at 1″ from folded bottom and 1″, 2″, 3″ marks from top.

Step 5

Follow the previous diagram and sew both sides leaving a 1″ gap at the bottom and between the 2″ & 3″ mark.

Step 6

Fold fabric down at the 1″ to 2″ mark and fold again from the 2″ to 3″ creating a double fold. Iron. Top stitch the fold

Step 7

Attach your cord to a safety pin and thread one piece form the left, all the way around and come out the same opening. do same on the right opening

Step 8

You will have two strands coming out of both sides

Step 9

Knot the end of the cord and put through the 1″ gap on the bottom. Do the same for both sides

Step 10

Zig-zag stitch near the edge to hold cord and then straight stitch to finish closing

Step 11

Iron your bag and your done!
